Yin Xiuzhen
‘Wall Instrument No. 27,’ 2019–21
‘Wall Instrument No. 27,’ 2019–21
Yin Xiuzhen is best known for her sculptural installations made from found or recycled materials such as used clothes, shoes, and suitcases. The objects act as mementos, referencing the individual and collective narratives that have been overwhelmed by the tide of urbanization in her native Beijing. Porcelain has been at the center of Yin’s recent practice; although the medium is associated with Chinese history and tradition, she uses an unconventional firing technique to create variations in color and texture. In ‘Wall Instrument No. 27’ (2019–21) fragments of clothing are embedded in the surface cracks, preserving the experiences of those who have worn the garments in the past.
