‘Floater 73,’ 2018
Derrick Adams, a multidisciplinary artist, explores the representation of contemporary African American life through painting, photography, sculpture, video, and performance art. He is fascinated by popular culture and how media and society inform the public perception of Black identity.
In Adams’s ‘Floater’ series of mixed-media works, he celebrates the Black figure at leisure, relaxing and playing with whimsical floats in unspecified pools. In ‘Floater 73’ (2018) Adams applies vivid blue acrylic in a loose, painterly style to depict the water, emphasizing the playful swimmers with collaged elements of African prints, patterned textiles, and blocks of color. His focus on portraying a leisure activity is an acknowledgment of what he considers to be a side of Black society that is not typically depicted.
