Contemporary art, Dr. Seuss and the importance of mentorship feature in our MOSAIC and ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Art Collection event with acclaimed artist Shinique Smith.
Artist Shinique Smith, whose work is represented in the ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Art Collection and was the focus of the 2020 exhibition ‘Shinique Smith: Indelible Marks’ in the ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Art Gallery in New York, understands that defying the odds on a journey to success is no small thing. A webcast hosted by MOSAIC-CH network in November 2020 explored mentorship and diversity, and how these topics relate to the art world. As Shinique addressed systemic biases, it became abundantly clear that, ‘’no one is youer than you,’’ is a motto she stands by.
"The art world is no stranger to prejudices related to hierarchy and ethnicity." Highlighting the difficulties she has encountered as a Black, female artist, Shinique described how she continues to guide and mentor aspiring artists.
Discussing the impact her first mentor had on her, Shinique shared the qualities she deems most important in mentorship and how others can benefit from it.
