What is a Donor-Advised Foundation?

A DAF, or donor-advised foundation, is an increasingly popular alternative to setting up a charitable foundation, avoiding the administrative and financial burden that is normally involved with this kind of vehicle.

A DAF is a unique giving vehicle that allows donors to make charitable contributions, claim tax relief and Gift Aid (where eligible), and recommend donations when they are ready to do so. It provides a simple, cost-effective and flexible way to donate to your chosen charities.

1. Setting it up

Any UK resident and domiciled taxpayer – whether an individual or a company – can open a Donor-Advised Foundation with a ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ account. It's possible to open a ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ account and choose to only hold assets in the DAF account.

2. Making your donation

As a client, you can make charitable contributions to an account with the ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ UK DAF at any time, without any minimum or maximum limits imposed. For new clients, a minimum deposit is required to open a ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ account.

3. Reclaiming tax reliefs

There are various tax benefits for UK resident taxpayers. When gifting cash, donors can apply Gift Aid, increasing their donation by 25% at no extra cost, and benefit from income tax relief of up to 25%.

Gift Aid is applied when cash is contributed to the DAF account, and donors can backdate Gift Aid declarations up to four years. Once assets are in the DAF, they are under the legal ownership of the DAF, and there is no further tax treatment for the donor.

4. Grant making

All grants must be made to UK-registered or exempt charities and are subject to approval by the trustees in accordance with charity commission rules.

Investment and grant decisions for assets donated to the DAF can be recommended by the donor within broad parameters. Ownership and ultimate control rest with trustees, who make independent decisions in the best interests of the charity.

You can make grant recommendations at your discretion and determine the amount you wish to donate at any time. Options include making regular payments, allocating income generated from your portfolio, or contributing lump sums to an account with the ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ UK DAF.
